We continue to serve war amputees and seriously disabled veterans by acting as a navigator to help them access their benefits and services, sharing our expertise on all aspects of amputation, advocating for amputees and effecting legislative change.
In addition, through our formalized collaborative partnerships with the Department of National Defence (DND) and Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), we provide expert advice to shape standards and policies for prosthetics and care to best meet the needs of our war amputee veterans, as well as amputees who are actively serving.
“I received my funding from the Canadian Armed Forces yesterday.
“I would like to thank your team 1,000 times over for handling my file in such an exceptional way. It has been a long process, but to be supported by an expert team such as yours helps greatly in having faith in the system and staying positive.”

A Vital Navigator
Afghanistan war amputee Maj. Blaise with Secretary of the Montreal Branch and war veteran Jean‑Marie Paul.
As veterans’ health care is provided under a combination of federal and provincial systems, accessing benefits and services can be a complex and bureaucratic process. With more than 100 years of experience in assisting war amputees, we are well-versed
in this area and can help them navigate these systems.
We educate those who work with war amputees to bolster their knowledge of amputation and help them stay up-to-date on the evolving field of prosthetics, ensuring appropriate amputee care can be accessed within military services.
Expertise
As a centre of excellence, we have many resources available to amputees and their families on living with amputation. Our expertise covers a range of topics, including limb care and hygiene,
back pain, gait, phantom limb pain, driving and employment. Our information is gathered through participation in prosthetic trials, conferences such as the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research Forum, international prosthetic conferences, and involvement in both national and international professional associations.
Working in a consultative role, our expertise is also shared with VAC and DND to ensure war amputees receive the services and artificial limbs they need, as well as other support such as home/vehicle
adaptations and daily living aids, now and in the future.
Advocacy
The War Amps advocates for individual amputees who have encountered discrimination or red tape in accessing health care, important financial benefits and/or legal rights.
If you are facing roadblocks in securing benefits or services through VAC or DND, The War Amps can help.
Legislative Change
By sharing our information, resources and long-standing knowledge of amputation with policy-makers and government, The War Amps pursues legislative changes that better address the needs of all Canadian war amputees and their families.
The War Amps works in close collaboration with the National Council of Veteran Associations in Canada (NCVA) to ensure the position and concerns of seriously disabled veterans and, more
particularly, amputee veterans are identified and recognized in the NCVA Legislative Program for submission to the government, VAC and DND.
Since 1918, The War Amps has met the needs of war amputees. Today, the Association continues to serve them, and all Canadian amputees, including children.
