Headshot of Whiteford Stewart Dobbs

1881 - 1934

Whiteford Stewart Dobbs

Whiteford Stewart Dobbs was born on May 23, 1881, in India and enlisted with Montreal’s 87th Battalion (Canadian Grenadier Guards) in March 1916. He was wounded at Lens, France, the following year, resulting in the loss of his right arm below the elbow.

Once back in Canada, before his involvement with The War Amps, Mr. Dobbs was appointed Advisor on Amputation Cases to the Director of Vocational Training in Ottawa and helped organize functional training classes and assisted with finding employment for amputees. He also worked as the Superintendent of the Employment Service of Canada in Toronto.

Mr. Dobbs joined the Amputation Club of BC (soon to be known as The War Amputations of Canada) and, afterwards, assisted with organizing the Regina Branch.

He became a member of the Toronto Branch and served as President. During his first term as President, the regional branches were united into a national organization. The success of this, and the achievement of securing so many benefits for The War Amps membership, was in large measure due to Mr. Dobbs’ influence and hard work.

In addition to serving as Toronto Branch President, he held the following positions:

  • Editor, War Amps publication The Fragment
  • Executive Member, First Dominion Council, The War Amps

Mr. Dobbs passed away in 1934.
