Headshot of Perce Lemmon

1897-1993

Perce Lemmon

Perce Lemmon was born on February 20, 1897, in Brighton, England, and enlisted with the 18th Battalion (Western Ontario) when he was just 16 years old. He lost his leg at Vimy Ridge when a mortar shell hit his entire company, causing him to have to crawl out from under 42 dead.

Mr. Lemmon returned to France with other war amputees for the unveiling of the Vimy Ridge Memorial in 1936. He kept a scrapbook from that trip, including carefully preserved photos and memorabilia that he often shared with others.

As an active member of the Association, Mr. Lemmon held several positions, including:

  • President and Secretary Treasurer, Southwestern Ontario Branch
  • Member, Civilian Liaison Committee, Southwestern Ontario Branch

Awards:

  • Meritorious Service Membership, The War Amps
  • Distinguished Service Membership, The War Amps
  • Honorary CHAMP Membership
  • Canada 125 Medal

At the age of 90, he was featured in a War Amps production, A Vimy Veteran Remembers, in which he described what it was like to be a young soldier fighting in the trenches.

For his long-standing support of The War Amps work, he was awarded the Canada 125 Medal. This honour was granted to those who have made a significant contribution to Canada, their community or to fellow Canadians. He also received The War Amps Meritorious Service Membership, Distinguished Service Membership and Honorary CHAMP Membership.

Mr. Lemmon passed away on November 25, 1993.
