1907-1988

Harry Worling

Harry Worling was born on December 23, 1907, in Aberdeen, Scotland. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he volunteered for service and was commissioned in the Indian Army in 1940. He fought in Malaya (present day Malay Peninsula and Singapore) and was wounded in action, resulting in the loss of his right arm above the elbow. He was then taken by the Japanese military in 1942 at the fall of Singapore and spent more than three years as a prisoner of war.

Upon his release, Mr. Worling settled in Canada and joined The War Amps Toronto Branch. He was extremely active and held many positions, including:

  • Dominion Secretary-Treasurer, The War Amps
  • President, Toronto Branch (1966-1967)
  • Executive Member, War Amps Dominion Council (1969)
  • Honorary National Secretary-Treasurer, War Amps National Council (1975)
  • Chairman, War Amps Prosthetics Committee
  • Member, War Amps Club Management Committee
  • Member, War Amps Board of Supervisors
  • Member, Key Tag Service Advisory Committee
  • Member, National Civilian Liaison Committee

  • Meritorious Service Membership, The War Amps

Mr. Worling had a message published in the 34th Dominion Convention program stating that he felt the most satisfaction from the letters of appreciation he received from hundreds of War Amps members, their widows and even their children. These letters often contained heartfelt thanks for his help securing general pension increases for those who had served and for their families.

He was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Membership and Meritorious Service Membership from The War Amps.

Mr. Worling passed away on December 2, 1988.
