1931-2014

George Kavanagh

George Louis Kavanagh of Conception Harbour, Newfoundland, and formerly of Toronto and St. John’s, was born on July 4, 1931. In 1949, at the age of 18, he joined the Canadian Army. He trained in Montreal, and then served with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps in the Korean War from 1952-1954.

Upon returning to Canada, he was injured in an industrial accident and lost his right leg above the knee. He was discharged from the Army in 1957 and joined The War Amps Toronto Branch, serving first as Secretary and then as Vice-President – a position he held for more than 18 years. He was also a member of the Civilian Liaison Committee.

  • Ambassador for Peace Medal, South Korea

He worked as a public servant with the Department of National Defence in Port Credit, Ontario, before relocating to Newfoundland. Mr. Kavanagh received the Ambassador for Peace Medal from South Korea in 2013, marking the 60th anniversary of the Korean War armistice. He was also a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his service to Canada.

Mr. Kavanagh passed away on March 31, 2014.
