Headshot of Fred Patton

1922-2008

Fred Patton

Frederick (Fred) Patton was born on February 19, 1922, in Coalhurst, Alberta. He enlisted with the Army in May 1941 and became an Electrician with the 7th Division of Engineers. He was posted overseas in August of the following year and served in Britain from 1942 to 1943. In October 1943, he was disarming a mine in England when it exploded, resulting in the loss of his right hand.

Mr. Patton returned to Canada in early 1944 and recovered in a hospital in Calgary, eventually being discharged from service in March of that year. He joined The War Amps Calgary Branch soon after and would go onto hold several positions, including:

  • Branch Director and President, Calgary Branch
  • Member, War Amps National Council

Like many of his fellow amputees, he excelled in golf and inspired others with disabilities to take up the sport. He was a strong supporter of the CHAMP Program and attended many of the seminars over the years. In recognition of this, he received the Honorary CHAMP Membership at the 1992 Western CHAMP Seminar.

In his personal life, Mr. Patton worked for the City of Calgary Health Department for 37 years before he retired in 1981 as the Chief Health Inspector.

He passed away on May 12, 2008.
