Charlie Jefferson

Charles (Charlie) Jefferson, of Ontario, was born on April 13, 1924, and enlisted with the Canadian Army in June 1943. As a Lieutenant with the Queen’s Own Rifles, he was injured by an anti-personnel mine in March 1945 in the Rhine Valley, Germany, resulting in the loss of his leg.

Mr. Jefferson joined the Ottawa Branch of The War Amps in 1945 and would go onto hold the positions of:

• Vice-President and President, Ottawa Branch
• Member, War Amps Civilian Liaison Program

In his role with the Civilian Liaison Program, he used his experience and knowledge as an amputee to help allay the fears of new civilian amputees when he visited them in hospitals.

Mr. Jefferson actively supported the Association throughout his life, including laying wreaths on behalf of The War Amps at many national Remembrance Day ceremonies. A dedicated supporter of the CHAMP Program, he attended numerous CHAMP seminars over the years, sharing his positive outlook with young amputees and their parents.

He also shared his story in a War Amps video entitled Charlie’s War.

For his life-long service to the Association, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Membership, Meritorious Service Membership and Honorary CHAMP Membership from The War Amps. Mr. Jefferson passed away on July 7, 2024.
