1931-2008
Charles Pond
Charles Edward Pond was born on September 3, 1931, in Buckingham, Quebec. In 1950, at the outbreak of the Korean War, he served with the Canadian Army Special Force and was assigned to the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry regiment. He was 19 years old when he and his fellow soldiers set sail for Korea. In December 1952, he suffered severe injuries when he was hit with enemy mortar fire, resulting in the loss of his left leg above the knee and his right leg below the knee.
Mr. Pond returned to Canada and began his civilian career with an engineering firm, but his sense of adventure lured him to the trucking industry as an owner and operator. He joined The War Amps Manitoba Branch and, over the years, held the positions of Secretary and President. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, boating and snowmobiling.
He passed away on February 24, 2008.
