Bert Steinhoff
Albert (Bert) Steinhoff was born on October 2, 1925, in Southampton, Ontario. He enlisted with the Canadian Army in September 1943 when he was only 17 years old and served as an Infantryman with the 4th Princess Louise Dragoon Guards. In December 1944, he was injured when he stepped on a Schu-mine while serving in Italy, resulting in the loss of his right leg below the knee.
Mr. Steinhoff returned to Canada and later went onto join The War Amps Waterloo-Wellington Branch in 1966, serving as President. He appeared in a video called War Amps Legacy along with a member of the Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, demonstrating the Association’s philosophy of “amputees helping amputees.” He lived this motto by attending many CHAMP seminars in Ontario over the years to mentor child amputees and their families.
