Arnold Sutcliffe

Arnold Sutcliffe was born on December 15, 1884, in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. He worked as a fruit grower in Western Canada until he enlisted with the 23rd Battalion (Quebec) in November 1914. He served in France and Belgium until February 1916, when he lost his right leg from a mortar shell exploding in the trench he was in, which shattered his right knee.

Mr. Sutcliffe returned to Canada and joined The War Amps, playing an active role with the Toronto Branch before transferring his membership to the Victoria Branch. Throughout his time with the Association, he held the positions of:

  • First Dominion Secretary-Treasurer, The War Amps (1921-1930)
  • Executive Member, War Amps Dominion Council
  • Secretary, Toronto Branch (1921-1932)
  • Member, War Amps Constitution and Bylaws Committee
  • Club Notes Contributor, War Amps publication The Fragment

He was known as a man of great distinction and served his fellow war amputee veterans with honour.

Mr. Sutcliffe passed away in 1943.
