1885-1975

Arnold Palmer

Arnold Palmer was born on February 2, 1885, in Lancashire, England. He immigrated to Canada in March 1915 and enlisted with the 45th Battalion (Manitoba). During the battle at Vimy Ridge, he lost his right leg below the knee.

After the First World War, Mr. Palmer joined The War Amps and was an active member of both the Winnipeg and Victoria branches, holding positions such as:

  • Secretary Treasurer, First Vice-President and President, Winnipeg Branch and Victoria Branch
  • First Vice-President (1925-1926) and Second Vice-President (1955-1964), War Amps Dominion Council
  • Executive Secretary, Citizen’s Rehabilitation Council

Awards:

  • Meritorious Service Membership, The War Amps
  • Distinguished Service Membership, The War Amps

Mr. Palmer was known especially for his tireless work to ensure war amputee veterans had adequate housing. For his dedication, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Membership and the Distinguished Service Membership.

He passed away in 1975.
